Types and Variants

The Quick Response Code family comprises a sequence of variants, each preserving the symbology's core decoding behavior while addressing a particular operational constraint.


The original symbology released in 1994 — retroactively known as Model 1 — was succeeded by Model 2, which remains the dominant variant in deployment today. Subsequent variants address miniaturization (Micro QR), high payload (iQR), restricted readability (SQRC), aesthetic integration (Frame QR), and rectangular form factors (rMQR).
