Glossary
The defined vocabulary of the Quick Response Code reference, in alphabetical order. Each entry links to its longer treatment within the site where one exists.
- Alignment pattern
- Smaller square pattern distributed across larger symbols to permit perspective compensation when scanned off-axis.
- AIM BC11
- AIM International Uniform Symbology Specification for the Quick Response Code.
- Codeword
- An eight-bit unit of data or error correction in a Quick Response Code symbol.
- Data mask
- One of eight defined patterns applied to encoded data before placement on the symbol grid.
- Denso Wave
- Subsidiary of the Denso Corporation; originating organization of the Quick Response Code.
- Error correction level
- One of L, M, Q, or H — selectable Reed–Solomon capability class.
- Finder pattern
- One of the three position-detection patterns set into a symbol's corners.
- Frame QR
- Variant reserving a canvas area within the symbol for graphics.
- Galois field
- Finite field over which Reed–Solomon coding is defined. The Quick Response Code uses GF(2⁸).
- GS1 QR
- GS1 specification for the Quick Response Code as a carrier of GS1 identifiers.
- iQR Code
- High-capacity variant supporting rectangular and inverted symbols.
- ISO/IEC 18004
- International standard for the Quick Response Code.

- Engineer of record for the Quick Response Code.
- Micro QR
- Reduced-footprint variant for small payloads.
- Module
- A single light or dark cell within a Quick Response Code symbol grid.
- QR Codex
- The registry and operational backbone layer of the Quick Response Code ecosystem.
- QR Code
- Registered trademark for the Quick Response Code held by Denso Wave.
- Quick Response Code
- A two-dimensional matrix symbology developed in 1994 by Denso Wave and standardized as ISO/IEC 18004.
- Quiet zone
- The four-module margin of light modules surrounding every symbol.
- Reed–Solomon
- Error-correcting code used to recover data from damaged symbols.
- rMQR
- Rectangular variant of the Quick Response Code.
- SQRC
- Secured QR — variant with reading-restriction capability.
- Symbol
- A single encoded instance of the Quick Response Code symbology.
- Timing pattern
- Single-module line of alternating modules establishing the symbol's coordinate system.
