How to scan a Quick Response Code
On every modern phone the camera is the scanner. No app, no account, no setup — and one habit worth keeping before you tap.
The short answer: open your phone's camera, point it at the code so the whole square is in frame, wait about a second, and tap the link that appears. That is the entire procedure on any current iPhone and on the overwhelming majority of Android devices. The symbology was designed in 1994 to be located and decoded from any rotation, which is why you never have to line the code up neatly.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Camera app (the rear camera).
- Aim so the whole Quick Response Code, including the blank margin around it, fills a comfortable part of the frame.
- A yellow notification banner appears at the top of the screen with the destination. Tap it.
If no banner appears, the feature has been switched off. Open Settings → Camera and enable Scan QR Codes. There is also a Code Scanner tile you can add to Control Centre, which is useful when you scan often.
Android
- Open the Camera app. Most manufacturers — Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola — decode a Quick Response Code directly and show a tappable link chip.
- If nothing appears, open Google Lens. It is built into the Google app, into the camera on many devices, and into Google Photos.
- On Samsung devices there is also a dedicated Scan QR code tile in the notification shade's quick settings.
Scanning from a screenshot, a photo, or a second screen
A Quick Response Code does not have to be printed. It decodes just as well from a saved image, and that is often the easier route when someone has sent you a code by message or email.
- iPhone: open the image in Photos and tap the Live Text icon, or press and hold on the code itself.
- Android: open the image in Google Photos and tap Lens.
- Desktop: most browsers can read a code from an image through an extension; alternatively, photograph the screen with your phone. The symbology tolerates the moiré and glare of a screen capture surprisingly well.
When a Quick Response Code will not scan
Failures are almost never mysterious. They fall into a small number of physical causes, each with a direct remedy.

A Quick Response Code carries Reed–Solomon error correction, so it keeps working with a portion of its area lost — roughly 7% at level L and about 30% at level H. That resilience is why a scuffed parcel label still reads. It also has a limit, and a code that has stopped reading has usually passed it.
The habit worth keeping: read before you tap
Scanning a code is safe. Following a code is a decision. The banner or link chip on your phone shows the destination before it opens; that half-second glance is the whole of practical Quick Response Code safety. If a code has been stuck over another code, if the domain does not match the business, or if the page immediately asks for a password or a payment, stop.
