Quiet zone
A four-module margin of light modules must surround every Quick Response Code symbol on every side, permitting reliable detection by a scanner.
Definition
The quiet zone is a region of the same colour as the light modules of the symbol — typically white — extending at least four modules from every edge of the symbol. It is part of the symbol's definition; a symbol printed without an adequate quiet zone is non-conformant.
Role in detection
The quiet zone provides the contrast boundary against which a scanner locates the symbol's position-detection patterns. Without it, the 1:1:3:1:1 ratio of the finder pattern cannot be reliably distinguished from surrounding artwork.
Practical guidance
- Print or render the quiet zone in the same colour as the symbol's light modules.
- Maintain the four-module minimum on every side, including when the symbol is centered within a coloured background or surrounded by decorative artwork.
- When in doubt, increase the quiet zone beyond four modules; the standard permits any larger margin.
