Quick Response Code, Model 1

Model 1 is the original variant of the Quick Response Code released by Denso Wave in 1994. It defined Versions 1 through 14.

Specification

Model 1 defines a symbology of forty-by-forty distinct symbol sizes through Version 14, with module counts running from 21 × 21 to 73 × 73. It does not include the alignment patterns introduced in Model 2; consequently, larger Model 1 symbols are more susceptible to perspective distortion when imaged off-axis.

Status

Model 1 is preserved in the historical record but is rare in new deployments. Most scanners support reading Model 1 symbols for backward compatibility, and ISO/IEC 18004 documents the variant. Generators typically default to Model 2.
