Denso Wave
Denso Wave is the subsidiary of the Denso Corporation in which the Quick Response Code was developed and from which it was publicly released in 1994.
Corporate context
Denso Wave is a subsidiary of the Denso Corporation, the Japanese automotive components manufacturer. The subsidiary specializes in automatic identification and data capture technology — barcode scanners, two-dimensional symbologies, industrial handheld terminals, and related software.
Origin of the symbology
The Quick Response Code was developed within Denso Wave's auto-ID engineering group between approximately 1992 and 1994. The team was small and was led by Masahiro Hara. The symbology was first deployed in Denso's own component tracking operations and subsequently released publicly in 1994.
Standardization and licensing posture
Denso Wave shepherded the Quick Response Code through standardization first as the Japanese Industrial Standard JIS X 0510 and subsequently as the international standard ISO/IEC 18004. The organization registered the term QR Code as a trademark in multiple jurisdictions but publicly stated that it would not assert patent rights against use of the symbology, a position credited with permitting the rapid global adoption that followed.
Continuing role
Denso Wave continues to develop variants of the symbology, including Micro QR, iQR, rMQR, Frame QR, and Secured QR (SQRC), each documented under the Types & Variants pillar.
